Except for our Barn Manager, there are no paid positions in our organization. Without volunteers we can not operate. Although there are some tasks that require a knowledge of handling, training and caring for horses, there are many important jobs that do not require any horse experience at all. A love of horses, horse people and belief in and enthusiasm for our mission is the only requirement. Below are just a few of the areas where we always need volunteer help; if you have other skills that you would like to offer, please contact us. We would love to have you join our team!
There are so many chores that are needed to make the barn a clean, safe, happy environment for the horses - filling hay bags, cleaning buckets, cleaning stalls & paddocks, sweeping the aisles and organizing work areas. All of these chores are the perfect place to start if you want to be around the horses or learn more about handling horses.
A multitude of routine jobs, repairs, and special projects are involved in running a horse operation! Carpentry skills are needed to build & repair fences, shelters and training equipment; tractor operators with experience bush hogging, moving hay, dragging a harrow or digging fence post holes; electrical & plumbing repairs just to name a few.
Maintaining good records, organized files and routine correspondence is an important element to the success of our organization: keeping health records, tracking routine farrier, vet, dental, and specialist visits, filing contracts, writing thank you notes, taking inventory of feed, medical, office & barn supplies...it takes many people to get it all done!
We need photographers, bloggers, and social media creators to help document and promote daily life and special projects at the rescue in order to expand our following and support. Our goal is to maximize the use of the Meta platform and better utilize YouTube, Instagram, TicToc and other platforms to grow awareness of our mission.
We are seeking an experienced web developer to improve and maintain our website with current information, as well as maximizing our exposure to the public in search engines.
If you like to plan and coordinate events, we could use your talents! Coordinators are needed for regularly occurring clinics, open houses and adoption events as well as for special events to raise public awareness and encourage participation such as parades, tack sales, Halloween & Christmas barn parties & Volunteer Appreciation Days.
If you desire to work with the horses, but have little or no experience, grooming will be your first horse handling task after learning the barn routine and becoming familiar with the horses while doing barn chores. Brushing for healthy skin and coat, as well as a form of myofascial release therapy, is an important step in a rescue horse's rehabilitation.
Ground Trainers work under the supervision of our staff trainers to teach the horse basic manners and respect - to halter, lead, stand, back and to walk, trot, canter and halt on command while on a line or at liberty in the round pen. All ground trainers must learn and employ the methods of training endorsed and utilized at MS Horses to ensure consistency.
Must have previous training experience or have completed at least one of MS Horses Advanced Training Clinics. Saddle trainers introduce saddle training to untrained horses and evaluate previously ridden horses to determine any holes in their training or bad habits that need work. All training must conform to MHR endorsed methods.
Exercise riders provide the routine schooling and "wet saddle blankets" to give green horses more experience and to maintain the training the horse has received while it is waiting for adoption. Exercise riders work under the supervision of our staff trainers, and are usually limited to experienced volunteers that have attended clinics & training sessions.
If you have experience loading, unloading and trailering horses, we could use your help! There is always a need for a hauler to pick up, take to the vet, or deliver to a new location. Prior experience driving a truck & trailer, and adequate insurance, is a requirement.
