How You Can Help
There are many ways that you can help MississippiHorses.org fight the problem of unwanted horses in America.
  • Become a Part of the MississippiHorses.org Network
You can become a part of the MississippiHorses.org network. Do you have land that could support a horse or two? Would you be willing to serve as a “foster parent” for a rescued horse until an adoptive family is found? Are you a veterinary professional who wants to help us keep our horses healthy? All of these things and more can be done. If you are willing to help as an active network participant, just click here.
  • Make a Donation to Operation Mississippi Horses
Your donation to Operation Mississippi Horses will help our efforts tremendously. Many of the horses we rescue are in dire need of veterinary attention, and some may eventually have to be euthanized. The veterinarians and other veterinary professionals in our network are working hard to provide as much as they can on a voluntary basis, but they can’t always work for free. Your donation will go a long way toward making sure that these dedicated people can receive a token amount for the priceless service they provide.
Operation Mississippi Horses is a 501c3 non profit medical assistance
fund that is administered through the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. Help save horses from a cruel death by slaughter or abandonment. Click here to make a donation to save the horses. Be sure to designate your donation as a contribution to Operation Mississippi Horses.

  • Trainers Needed
Many horses are rescued without any training or performance history. Placing a rescued horse in an adoptive home is difficult when its training and experience are unknown. Therefore, horse rescue organizations are always in need of qualified trainers to help evaluate the horses skills and special needs, and to assist in training the younger
  • Report Abuse/Neglect
Please contact your local animal control officer if you suspect that horses or other equines are being abused or neglected. If your county doesn't have an animal control officer just call your local sheriff or police department. If the dispatcher tells you there is nothing they can do, which some have done in the past, ask to speak to the shift sergeant or deputy in charge. If the owner needs to get rid of the horse but is unable to for any reason, they can contact one of the following rescue agencies and surrender the animal. A person will not be charged with animal cruelty if the animal is willingly surrendered.

  • Join the Fight Against Horse Slaughter
First, become politically involved in our issues and communicate your concerns regularly with your local legislators and members of Congress. Efforts of horse lovers across the nation have resulted in the closing down of all three slaughterhouses in the United States, and we are working on Congress to pass a nationwide ban of this inhumane practice so none will ever open again. Unfortunately, the closure of the plants in America has caused many horses to be inhumanely transported to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. We are now working for the passage of a bill in both chambers of Congress (H.R. 503 and S. 311) that will amend the Horse Protection Act. This amendment will make it illegal to sell, donate or transport a horse for slaughter in the United States. The web sites below offer resources and information on how you can make a difference.
Own Responsibly
The Unwanted Horse Coalition hopes teaching people to own responsibly will help lower the number of unwanted horses.
