Adopting a Rescued Horse
Adopting a horse from a rescue organization is not necessarily a good way to bargain shop for a horse. In many instances, rescue horses can be much more expensive than buying a horse from a private party or breeder. Some horses that are turned in to animal shelters or rescue organizations have been abandoned or sometimes legally seized by animal cruelty officers for abuse. These animals will sometimes require months of rehabilitation to regain their strength and health. They may be afraid of people from being cruelly mistreated, neglected or abandoned. Some animals instantly forgive a person who is kind to them but others may take months or sometimes years to get over the fear of past abuse.

Some horses may have problems that their previous owner did not want to address, e.g.., lameness, disposition, lack of training, etc. These are the horses that can thrive with a new experienced owner. It may take a lot of patience and extra expense in medical care but the outcome can create a wonderful experience for both horse and owner.

Adopting a horse is about helping the rescue organization that saved the horse from abuse or slaughter and providing the horse with a better life. Rescuing an animal and being a part of their rehabilitation and helping them to again trust in human beings can be the most gratifying experience someone can have.
